16th Annual FIU Torch Awards

Honors College alumna, Leonor Anthony ’06, MA ’09, will be honored at FIU’s sixteenth annual Torch Awards Gala on April 1 at the JW Marriott Marquis Miami.

The Torch Award is the highest honor bestowed upon alumni and faculty by the FIU Alumni Association, and recognizes their outstanding achievements. These FIU supporters are making positive impacts on their profession, the community and our university.

Ms. Anthony will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award for the Honors College. A contemporary artist born in Havana, Cuba, she is an accredited scholar, painter, photographer and published author. Since 2013, Ms. Anthony has held the prestigious title of Artist-in-Residence of the FIU Honors College. In addition, she is the founder and curator of the Honors College Art Collection.

Ms. Anthony is best known as an activist artist. Her views concerning human rights, the environment, and the welfare and empowerment of women throughout the world are the framework of her creations, which highlight the magnitude and prevalence of social issues throughout history.

Her international acclaimed shows include: Aqua Art Miami – Art Basel Week, Miami 2016; Contemporaries at the Uffizi, Florence 2016; Art Expo, New York 2016; Museé du Louvre, Paris 2015; Expo Milano, Milan 2015; Museo Bramante, Rome 2015; Biennale of Palermo, Palermo 2015. She will participate by invitation in the 57th Biennale of Venice 2017.

Beyond paying tribute to FIU’s most loyal and dedicated supporters, the event will support the future construction of our FIU Alumni Center. Serving as a multi-purpose facility for academic, social and business gatherings, the space will recognize donors, share university history, and showcase both student and alumni accomplishments. The FIU Alumni Center will foster and encourage lifelong connections between Panthers.

Proceeds will also benefit the First Generation Scholarship Fund, providing financial support to qualified undergraduate students who are the first generation in their families to attain a college degree. All donations are matched 100% by the State of Florida, doubling donor impact and making dreams come true for many deserving students.

This year’s masquerade theme is sure to entertain.
